2011 NFL Mock Draft: Part IX
Round 1:
1 - CAR: Bowers, Da'Quan - DE - Clemson
Da'Quan Bowers should be the #1 overall selection in the NFL draft, but with all the hype surrounding Nick Fairley, it's anyone's guess. Bowers is extremely productive and a high character guy that would bring Carolina a great pass rusher that they lost in Julius Peppers.

2 - DEN: Fairley, Nick - DT - Auburn
Fairley is a guy with a little bit of a mean streak and that's good along the defensive line. He has the quickness to be an effective end in the 3-4 scheme.

3 - BUF: Miller, Von - OLB - Texas A&M
Von Miller has been flying up draft boards because of his great Senior Bowl. He is very productive and will most likely come out with an excellent combine. The Bills need a pass-rushing outside linebacker for their 3-4 defensive scheme that they have been switching to for the past year. MIller could be a great fit in Buffalo.

4 - CIN: Green, A.J. - WR - Georgia
If selected, AJ Green will have the tough task of replacing Ocho Cinco and T.O. in the same season. Two big names that didn't put up big numbers this year. The Bengals need someone explosive and reliable for Carson palmer to throw the ball to.

Peterson is a shut-down corner that would give the Cardinals one of the best CB duos in the league.

6 - CLE: Dareus, Marcell - DT - Alabama
After cutting Shaun Rogers in an effort to switch to their new 4-3 scheme, the Browns are now in dire need of a Defensive Tackle. Marcell Dareus has been a top 10 talent all year long and would be the best pick available for the Browns organization.

7 - SF: Gabbert, Blaine - QB - Missouri
With the first pick in the Jim Harbaugh regime, the 49ers select.... Blaine Gabbert. I haven't been too high on Gabbert, but with his physical tools and Harbaugh's ability to groom Quarterbacks into special players, the 49ers might just have themselves their new franchise Quarterback.

8 - TEN: Amukamara, Prince - CB - Nebraska
The Titans aren't going to draft a Quarterback at pick #8? Maybe if Gabbert was still available, the Titans would have taken a chance, but for now they will get the best player available who also fills a huge need for them.

9 - DAL: Jordan, Cameron - DE - California
The Cowboys have Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, and Jason Hatcher all coming up on free agency, so Defensive End will become a huge need for the cowboys. Jordan is a beast who has played in a 3-4 defensive scheme at Cal and would be an immediate contributor from day 1. His Senior Bowl practices have wowed many coaches and scouts and have pushed his stock into the high end of round 1.

This could not be a better situation for Newton. The Heisman winner will have AP, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, and Visanthe Shiancoe. He'll do just fine in Leslie Frazier's new Vikings team.

13 - DET: Solder, Nate - OT - Colorado
Thinking about the Lions offensive woes last year made me pinpoint that Matt Stafford has not been able to stay healthy and the running game never really got going. How do you solve those issues? Blockers. Detroit has the option here to get the best blocker in the draft who can start right away on either side of the line.

Smith is one of those high-potential guys who just needs some polishing. He can wreak absolute havoc on offensive tackles with his speed and pass-rushing ability. The Rams really dont have much of a pass rush even with their high draft pick from a few years ago, Chris Long.

An exciting Quarterback with a lot of potential who can beat teams with his arm and his feet. They may opt for a Running Back but I think they can address that need in the later rounds.

16 - JAX: Kerrigan, Ryan - DE - Purdue
The Jags have needed someone, anyone, who can create some kind of pass rush. Kerrigan is an absolute beast when it comes to getting to the QB.

17 - NE: Liuget, Corey - DT - Illinois
He is a quick defensive lineman who can be the Richard Seymour-type player that they Pats have needed since the trade with Oakland.

18 - SD: Clayborn, Adrian - DE - Iowa
Clayborn could have gone a lot higher if he would have had a better senior campaign. He's a lot like Cameron Jordan in the fact that he is a big body who can still create a pass rush. He would get the opportunity to play across from Luis Castillo and make that Chargers defensive line a prominent force in the AFC West.

19 - NYG: Ayers, Akeem - OLB - UCLA
Akeem Ayers could easily go much higher than this but he's one of those players that does everything well but nothing great. He'll be a great solution to the Giants Linebacker woes with Bulluck being way up there in years and Clint Sintim under-performing.

20 - TB: Watt, J.J. - DE - Wisconsin
The Bucs are going to continue to build that young defensive line of theirs. After selecting McCoy and Price in last years draft, the Bucs are set at Defensive Tackle, but they still have little to no pass rush. When scouts talk about Watt, they use words like "workhorse" and "non-stop motor"; that is the exact kind of player that Raheem Morris covets.

The Colts normally dont do what people predict, but this year was an eye-opener. They dont have the luxury of grabbing an extra pass-rusher or another Receiver, they need to address their porous Offensive Line.

23 - PHI: Smith, Tyron - OT - USC

24 - NO: Heyward, Cameron - DE - Ohio State
The Saints were primed to make another Super Bowl run but injuries and a poor defense led to their season being cut short. Heyward had a great bowl game performance and has all the physical tools you look for in a pass rusher. He can bring the Saints defense back dominance.

A late riser with all the "essentials", just like Kareem Jackson of last years draft, Jimmy Smith has great size speed and tackling ability.

The Ravens just can't go wrong when it comes to getting a player out of the U. Especially when he fills a huge need for them, Ozzie will pull the trigger on this picture perfect pick.

27 - ATL: Houston, Justin - DE - Georgia
The Falcons are focusing on two needs: Defensive End and Wide Receiver. They still may look at a player like Torrey Smith of Maryland, but I just don't think they can pass up on a stud pass-rusher like Justin Houston. He can essentially be a John Abraham clone in this defense.

A knee injury and unproductive 2010 season will cause the former Heisman winner to drop. While I don't think the Patriots will even keep this pick (we all know how Belicheck loves to trade down) this could be another huge steal in the draft for the Pats. Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis had a breakout year and Danny Woodhead played admirably, but those two guys shouldn't be the only options at Running Back for New England.

30 - NYJ: Wilkerson, Muhammad - DT - Temple
Wilkerson is quietly becoming an elite 3-4 Defensive End prospect. All this guy does is produce and kill offenses. This is a Rex Ryan kind of guy. If the Jets can pressure the AFC elite Quarterbacks then they can finally get over that AFC Championship hump.

31 - PIT: Pouncey, Mike - OG - Florida
Two Pouncey's are better than one. The Steelers showed how bad their line was in the Super Bowl. While Mike isn't as good as his brother Maurkice, he is still a very good option who could start on the Steelers offense on day 1.

32 - GB: Sherrod, Derek - OT - Mississippi St.
The Packers have great luck with drafting. They don't need to get the big name guys, they just go out and get players who are high in character and players who can just flat out play. Sherrod isn't a flashy player nor does he have scouts jumping out of their seats. But he is definitely worth a first round selection and could supplant Chad Clifton eventually as the starter at Left Tackle.

Senior Bowl answers some questions; but leaves just as many
The Senior Bowl took place on January 29th in Mobile, Alabama with the South prevailing over the North in what seemed to be a relatively easy victory, 24-10. There were many questions surrounding Washington Quarterback, Jake Locker, and it looks like none of them were answered. Yes, he does seem like he is a starting Quarterback at the next level, and we know he has amazing athletic ability, but he couldn't throw a touchdown this past weekend and he couldn't seem to hold onto the ball, with two of his fumbles being recovered by his own offensive linemen.
On the other hand, there were a few winners from this weekend's Senior Bowl and practices. Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal has been getting rave reviews about his versatility and non stop motor. The two players who shined in the game itself were, in state rivals, Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State and Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami. Ponder led multiple scoring drives throwing 2 TD's, with one of those scores going to Hankerson, who finished the day with 5 catches and 100 yards receiving.
These performances may not have landed either player in the first round, but may have very well solidified them a spot at the top of round 2. Depending on their respective combines, Hankerson might find himself as a late first round prospect, and Ponder could see his stock rising and be selected early on day 2 a la Colt McCoy, who many have compared him to.

15 - MIA: Mallett, Ryan - QB - Arkansas
The Dolphins absolutely HAVE to get their hands on a quarterback in this draft. if not all hell might break loose in Miami. Mallet's stock is dropping because of the usual scout speculation that he doesn't have "it" and his lack of mobility is a liability.
